LPC Supervision for Provisional Therapists in Oklahoma

REALITY-BASED SUPERVISION…

…for what they don’t teach you in grad school.

You have completed your Master’s Degree and graduated to practicing therapy in real life

Congratulations! This is a REALLY big moment. No amount of text books or writing assignments can prepare you for what it’s really like to be in the therapy room. Maybe you’re having a crisis of confidence and feeling like you don’t know anything (I’m sure you do!) or maybe you are really excited to dive in and practice all the things you’ve been learning about for the past few years. You want a supervisor who can help you to navigate the early years of your therapy career and guide you as you become a Licensed Professional Counselor. You want a chance to spread your wings without having to worry about being micromanaged. You are ready for a supervisor who will help you find your own style in and out of session.

You’ve come to the right place!

my supervision fits well with

Candidates seeking a realistic view of balancing life as a therapist.

Hey! Hey! I’m Melinda

I support provisionally licensed therapists or candidates to gain confidence and grow their clinical skills while they work toward licensure. I’m passionate about helping new therapists deal with unexpected challenges, discover their own work-life balance, and be a sounding board when they face workplace conflicts or ethical dilemmas.

I’m an EMDR Therapist in Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida.  I offer EMDR and EMDR Intensives to help clients struggling with overwhelm - whether that be because they’ve just had a baby, are living with unresolved trauma, or struggling with anxiety and depression with a few sprinkles of couples work.

Prior to private practice

I worked in…man…I’ve worked in a few places over the course of my career in behavioral and mental health beginning in 2001. In undergrad, I worked for a non-profit as a Behavior Management Specialist. After graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in psychology, I became a Case Manager at a juvenile detention center and my caseload consisted of juvenile sex offenders ages 11-18. I shifted into becoming a juvenile probation officer which led me back to school to work on my Master’s in Counseling.

I returned to my alma mater and the non-profit I was previously at throughout grad school; working up to a Multisystemic Therapist (MST). A relocation to Oklahoma landed me at another non-profit as a contract therapist (which is where I began my LPC-Candidacy and working on my hours for licensure) while simultaneously working at an equine therapeutic group home for teen girls and shifted into working at a step down program for adjudicated juveniles seeking reentry into society. The things we do to complete our supervision hours!

Once my hours were completed in 2011 and I became a full blown Licensed Professional Counselor (I still imagine confetti falling on me every time I talk about this moment!), I began setting up and building my private practice! By April of 2012, I had my first client in an empty office with a small card table and two folding chairs. Let me tell ya, imposter syndrome was thick at this time in my life. Especially not having a “professional looking” office to work out of. Money was so tight at this time and not a single client in my private practice cared that my office was empty. They were excited to watch each piece of decor come in and get arranged throughout their time with me. It was fun! By the end of 2014 I had completed the LPC-Supervision course and was officially approved to be an LPC-Supervisor!

As most therapists during the pandemic shifted to online and while most have returned to their office spaces; I have continued online and still love every minute of it! In 2020 I began my journey in perinatal mental health and am now Certified in Perinatal Mental Health. I followed this up with EMDR training in 2021 and I am currently working towards becoming EMDR Certified. I have so much passion towards growing professionally as a therapist and as a private practice business owner. I love sharing my glows and grows with those seeking an adventure down a similar path!

I work well with therapists who

Are goal oriented and self starters

Being goal oriented helps stay focused on reaching and completing specific tasks to becoming a high quality Licensed Professional Counselor. At this point in your career having an eager self starter mindset will help build a strong foundation as an independently licensed professional by the end of supervision.

Take control of their learning goals and the supervision agenda

It is super important for Candidates to know the expectations of the LPC Board and be able to utilize supervision to navigate the their learning goals. These goals will shift and change as supervision progresses; however, being prepared for supervision each week provides consistent time management skills and productivity throughout this journey.

Work independently yet do not hesitate to ask for support and guidance when needed

Being under supervision requires candidates to work primarily on your own, with your clients, and on your job site; which at times is a separate entity than where your LPC-Supervisor is located. However, as Candidates, there are still training wheels attached. Knowing, as your supervisor, I am only a phone call away along with having regularly scheduled weekly meetings provides confidence and safety to candidates and the clients they serve.

Enjoy supervision that is laid back, humorous, and involves no homework

I thrive in “chill mode”, can be a bit sarcastic, and honestly do not have time to “grade” or “check” unnecessary homework assignments. I enjoy supervision with candidates that involves casual strength based conversations about navigating the real life therapy world while also remaining focused on case consultation, ethical dilemmas with clients or within the workplace, and building confidence in your therapeutic skills.

Prefer a supervisor who is focused on “real world” lessons in therapy

I mean…let’s be R E A L! You are now fully in the real world, providing real therapy to real people!
